NORTHART is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition, ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT.

ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT is a dual gallery survey show of female-identifying contemporary artists working with abstraction from multiple cultural and aesthetic perspectives in Aotearoa today.

Curated by NORTHART Co-Director and Artist Jessica Pearless, the exhibition aims to chart a constellation of abstraction today, through examining the artistic processes and methodologies employed by the participating artists to showcase abstraction of the moment. A desire to present an optismistic, interconnected, collective response through an exploration of approaches by women artists led to the format of the exhibition - the purpose of the group show being to exemplify the richness of exploration occurring in the mode of abstraction. Dialogues between works will aim to illustrate the rich history of the genre, while focussing on the now, and possibilities in future practice.

Notions of timelessness, ritual, expression and aesthetics underpin the core interrelationships between selected artists. Considerations include - where the material and immaterial meet, examinations of the processes, the starting points, and how and if, concepts overlap, all aim to serve as conversation starters throughout the exhibition.

A public programme of events at NORTHART supported by The Chartwell Charitable Trust, including a symposium with exhibiting artists, led by Julia Waite and Linda Tyler, will encourage the sharing of ideas on contemporary approaches to abstraction. The artists and curator are available for interviews on request.
