Following the landmark success of Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in 2020-21, and the recent opening of the Wairau Māori Art Gallery at the Hundertwasser Arts Centre in Whangārei this month, Wahine Māori: The Art of Resistance continued this thread by celebrating the importance of Māori art practices and places an emphasis on the vital contribution that these artists make to society.

Wahine Māori: The Art of Resistance celebrated the significance of the artistic practice of these Wahine Māori and their contribution to contemporary art in New Zealand, as well as their importance to the expansion of the canon of New Zealand art history.
