Hye Rim Lee is a prolific contemporary artist working in a wide range of artistic modes including animation, performance and design. Lee is an Auckland based Korean-New Zealand artist. She attended Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in voice, before moving to New Zealand and completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Intermedia at Elam School of Fine Arts. As well as being a practicing artist, Lee is currently a lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.

The exhibition debuted Black Rose, a never before seen animation created by Lee over the course of eight years and completed in 2020. Alongside this new mixed media artworks will compliment the animation. In our second gallery work from a previous iteration of Lee’s practice, Crystal City, was featured. This was the first time Crystal City has been on display in New Zealand. Lee is an internationally recognised artist, with solo exhibitions in Korea, Italy, Japan, Spain, Germany and the United States. Her work is currently held in the art collections of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, The University of Auckland and Adam Art Gallery, Wellington, as well as international collections including the Seoul Museum of Art, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide and the Hara Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
