Gerard Copas

Subtraction to Abstraction

13 - 25 April, 2021

Opening: Sunday 11 April, 4 - 6 pm

Artist Talk: Sunday 18 April, 1 - 2 pm

Gerard Copas is a word-based artist whose hand painted texts include words or phrases as their primary artistic component. His paintings reference text-based post-modernist art employed by several contemporary artists since the 1950s. His hand-painted letters allude to the hard-edge painting movement of the 60s. The artists drawing and draughting skills form an essential component of his practice. Copas’ recent work explores negative shape and form using fragments from type. These fragments are often borrowed from words in existing text artworks, a new direction for Copas. This current work becomes more abstract and minimal in presentation, and utilises a formidably hard-edged technique.

This exhibition was curated by prominent New Zealand artist Billy Apple. This was the first artist’s show that Billy has curated.
